OYSTER FARMING AMBASSADOR

I consider myself a passionate oyster farmer enthusiast. My wife and I started raising oysters in 2011 and in the past few years the concept of residential oyster farming has really started to catch on in our region, along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. It’s pretty easy to understand why. The startup costs are inexpensive and it’s low maintenance with little to no overhead. And even though it’s a minute amount, farming oysters contributes to healing the Bay.

The Chesapeake Bay is not the pristine body of water that it used to be. When the early settlers found it, there were so many oyster reefs, they posed a navigational hazard. The main environmental advantage to having oysters in an ecosystem is their ability to filter and clean water…up to 50 gallons a day per oyster!

There were so many oysters during the early colonial period that it's been estimated that the entire Chesapeake Bay could be filtered in three days. Since then we have lost more than 98% of our natural oysters. Because of that loss, and other factors, the health of the Bay has suffered accordingly. I’m convinced that as long as man is around, we'll never see those kind of numbers again.

My wife and I embrace life on the Chesapeake Bay. That not only includes all the enjoyment we get from being on the water, but also accepting the responsibilities for “doing the right thing.” By raising our own oysters, we basically eliminate the need to buy any that come from the bay. Our oysters are reproducing more than oysters into the wild. And since we’ve started farming, we've noticed an increase in the natural population around our dock and shoreline. It’s our goal to create better habitats for those natural, wild oysters.

I grew up next to the Atlantic Ocean and I’m convinced I have saltwater running through my veins. All seems right with the world when I am on, in, or around the ocean or the bay. At the same time I’ve always enjoyed gardening (farming is too big of a word for what I do), so combining both loves was a no-brainer.
