CHARLIE SHULTZ

AQUAPONIC GROWING AMBASSADOR

I inspire others to grow aquaponically. I am an aquaponics pioneer who was motivated to dedicate my career to safe food production in response to stories of medical waste washing up on East Coast shores in the late 1980s. I educate consumers about the positive aspects of growing aquaponically. I cultivate networks of growers who share their experiences and information with others in order to further the development and acceptance of aquaponic food production.

Sustainable food production drives my dedication to aquaponics. Controlled environments allow for clean, safe year-round food production, in any climate. My systems typically re-cycle >98% of system water daily, for years on end. My fish convert feed efficiently, with a conversion nearly 1:1 (feed:flesh). No fertilizer is used, instead fish feed creates all the nutrients for plant production. Only organic pest control may be used and most growers utilize IPM strategies, including biological controls.

Nature has been my "church" since a young age. I remember sitting still for hours on end when hunting with my father early in life. Sitting there alone, I learned to meditate on the forest awakening. It charged my soul and nature still does that for me today. I respect the life force in every living being, both plants and animals. When using aquaponics, plant and fish health are critical for a balanced system to thrive, so keeping plants and fish in optimal conditions is a must.

I grow food and I teach others to grow food. The growing global population and their need for healthy food motivates me to wake every day ready for the challenges of natural food production. I blend farm production with training seminars, lectures and conference presentations, serving on advisory boards and industry task forces, and contributing to my community. I am very proud of the work I am doing toward accomplishing my mission.

At the end of the day, aquaponics is still farming. It is not always easy. There is not a lot of time off. On my scale of production, the pay is not the highest in terms of dollars. But aquaponic farming provides a great lifestyle for a family. It can be a feel good job, as long as you can weather the storms!
